We do it every day, but we rarely really think deeply about it! This workshop explores walking from an unusual perspective. On a guided stroll through Darmstadt, we'll look deeper into the experience of walking. Explore the boundary between hard infrastructure and our 'soft' emotions, feel how space shapes our experience and how our practice of walking shapes space!
After a short introduction into practices of walking, its rhythms and its transgressive power, we'll guide you through Darmstadt for you to experience both your own walking, but also Darmstadt as a contingent place of walking practices.
This workshop tries to turn our gaze away from cold hard data and infrastructure and open our eyes to more informal determinants of walking experience, without losing sight of how those 'objective' criteria shape walking experience, and who shapes that environment.
The last 20 minutes will be a space to collect our experiences and exchange thoughts. If desired, we can also explore established methodologies to capture walking experiences from the fields of sociology and geography, like walk along interviews or cuerpo territorio.
I'm a fox experienced in academic walking workshops. I've organised two of those already at academic conferences in Dresden and Tartu, Estonia so far!
For the last few years, I've been working as a geographer and research software engineer on all kinds of active mobility.
Outside of work, I'm rooted in queer and political activism.
