"Where *is* my money?" On the brittleness of the financial system
2025-09-12 , C120 - Art. 15 GDPR
Language: English

Sneakily shoveling money around is something that we've grown accustomed to seeing financial companies do in this capitalistic hellscape. This is however something we, as the public, have almost zero visibility on.

Would it surprise you to hear that, in a lot of cases, your money is located in a house of cards?

Join us in pondering and answering the questions of "just how fucked is the financial system, actually?","what could possibly go wrong?", "how does the 100'000 EUR insurance in case of a bank failure work?", and "wait, how much does the administration actually know at any given time?"

This talk will address issues within the financial system, the participating banks and companies, their proponents, the (hellish) web of dependencies therein, and the oversight (or lack thereof) that they are subject to.

It will sprinkle in throughout some mildly concerning - to the average creature - information on regulations, standards, insurance, licensing, operating requirements, as well as strategies used by companies to skirt around (already very loosely written) regulations.

maya (it/its) is a creature that enjoys building things, be it friendships, communities, events and - in the real world - security blinky boxes and software. It also enjoys breaking things and figuring out how stuff really functions, constantly striving to improve them, when it isn't completely burnt out.
